Schmidt beer was first brewed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1860 by Henry Schmidt. The beer was originally brewed in the back of Schmidt's tavern. In 1866, Schmidt opened a brewing facility on Girard Avenue and continued to brew beer there until 1983. The Girard Avenue brewery was one of the largest breweries in the United States at the time.
